 VICON CCTV Systems

Since it's founding in 1967, Vicon's only business has been the design, engineering and production of sophisticated video systems, principally for high-end security, safety, control and communications.  Video surveillance technology is rapidly evolving into an IP-based platform.

This past year, Vicon engineers unleashed a "Digital Video Revolution" through the creation of ViconNet, a powerful operating system that is setting industry standards for network video system operation.  Together with Kollector Elite/Pro recorders and servers, the ViconNet platform delivers network video of unparalleled performance and capability.

ViconNet is a software platform that ties Kollector recorders, workstations and other digital video products into an enterprise-wide digital video management platform designed to manage all video products making it perfect for any size system, big or small.

ViconNet allows an administrator to remotely set user rights and passwords for the network workstations with ViconNet software.  Changes to camera tilting, macro programming and scheduling, as well as frame rate manipulation, are all possible.  Each workstation is capable of viewing 16 simultaneous cameras live or playback video while supporting archiving, system configuration and the control of PTZ cameras without affecting recording.  In addition, internet connectivity for remote video transmission is supported.

Vicon Digital Video Recorders (DVR), the Kollector Elite and Kollector Pro are basically the same with some differences.  They both are 16-channel DVR with an ethernet port and 16 independent pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) control ports.  Both are powered by a ViconNet.  The main difference between the two models, Kollector Pro does not offer audio recording, a removable operating system and has different frame rates for video recording.  The Kollector Pro utilizes partitioning of one of the hard drives to store the operating system and offers frame rates of 30, 60, or 120 frames per second (fps).

The Kollector Elite utilizes 120 and 240 frames per second for video recording.  Both Kollectors offer a maximum 900GB hard drive and Vicon's SCSI RAID system ray be added for additional storage if it is required.

The Kollector Elite/Pro DVR's use optimized proprietary video compression based on a hybrid mix of MPEG and Wavelet compression  technologies to achieve high-quality image recording with small file sizes.  In addition, both DVR's are equipped with an internal CD-R/W drive for backing up and re-recording the digitized video.

The digitized video uses MD5 based authentication for security and legal purposes.  MD5 is a "message digest algorithm" invented by Professor Ronald Rivest of MIT in 1990-91.  The algorithm is used to verify data integrity in applications that deal with large data segments.  The MD5 algorithm creates a unique 128-bit data message.  This message is claimed to be as unique to the specific data that generated it as a fingerprint would be to a human.  The MD5 is currently a standard to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the engineering body that deals with all standard internet operations such as protocols.

Vicon's product line also consists of cameras, a full line of lenses, monitors, mounting accessories, remote positioning devices (PTZ), VCR's, consoles and systems.  Cameras transmit video over coax or with the proper media converter over optical fiber and twisted pair wire.  Vicon's products are used in a variety of surveillance, security, safety and control applications in banks, gaming casinos, traffic control, schools, hospitals, airports, sporting arenas, retailing, multiple commercial and industrial installations, and more.   Contact Kendall Electric for more information.

The Plastic Advantage

The computer revolution requires the installation of large numbers of computers in existing and new schools, businesses, and institutions. Each of these computers requires the installation of an electrical power outlet and a communication cable outlet. If the wires and cables are installed in walls, the installation is very expensive, can create an environmental problem by dislodging lead and asbestos, and is very inaccessible for future revisions.

Plastic surface raceway has become the method of choice for many installations because of its’ numerous advantages over in-wall installation:

  • Low installed cost
  • High density of outlets
  • Accessibility
  • Ease of modification and additions
  • Bend Radius control
  • Good appearance
