I/O, I/O... It's Wireless to PLC I Go |
|
Mike Wehrenberg - Automation Sales Manager, Kendall Electric |
|
Kendall Electric spends time working on unique PLC communication requirements. Those requirements quite often
revolve around networks to support distributed I/O, HMI, variable speed drives, and even servo motion control. Typically, Devicenet and
Ethernet/IP along with Controlnet are the most common means of hard-wiring these network solutions. On the other hand, we’ve seen a growing
use of wireless communications in the world of PLC communications as well. Most of the time, those wireless solutions use two or more RF
modems that allow two or more PLC’s to message each other with control and status information.
But what do you do when you simply need additional I/O points to connect in a wireless fashion to a single PLC? The answer used to be using
two PLC’s and use the RF modems to have one of the PLC’s act as a “wireless I/O node” and send the I/O information back to the primary PLC. This
means two PLC’s and two PLC programs along with the two RF modems. Today we have a simpler, less expensive, single PLC answer....
Introducing MDS NETio™ MDS NETio is an integrated, scalable family of wireless communication products for analog and discrete I/O
signals. NETio allows users to interface I/O signals using standard serial and IP/Ethernet protocols or regenerate I/O signals between PLCs,
RTUs and control/monitoring devices. Standard serial or IP/Ethernet payload communications for separate devices is also supported.
MDS...Global wireless solutions. Industrial Wireless Performance. For nearly two decades, Microwave Data Systems (MDS) has been
providing highly secure, industrial strength, mission critical wireless communications solutions for a broad spectrum of public and private
sector clients worldwide. Kendall Electric is a distributor for the NETio MDS products along with their entire family of license-free spread
spectrum, frequency hopping RF modems. They have been a Rockwell Encompass partner for over ten years and are a great complement to the wireless
communication needs in a number of industrial needs such as water/wastewater, remote data collection, campus-wide industrial requirements,
remote I/O needs, I/O and communications for rotary applications or moving equipment. Please contact your Kendall Electric Specialist or
Account Manager for RF I/O or RF modem communication needs.
